Citizens are warned of scammers imitating Microsoft

Leelanau County Senior Services is reporting that people in the County are receiving telephone calls from "Microsoft" about a virus.  The caller ID shows 1-800-642-7676, the correct toll-free number for Microsoft.  This is probably done by using Caller ID Spoofing.  Click here to learn more about Caller ID spoofing.

The scam says that "Microsoft" will fix the virus issues for a fee that you pay for by giving them your credit card number or back account information.  Please be aware that Microsoft will not call people and charge them to remove viruses.  As always, do not give out personal information, credit card or banking information over the phone if you have even the slightest doubt about who you are giving the information to.

Weather continues to keep deputies busy on crashes

Although crime has been relatively quiet recently, motor vehicle crashes continue to keep Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies busy.  5 more 2 car crashes were reported Thursday, along with vehicles still sliding off the roads and into snowbanks.  No injuries were reported in any of the crashes, one of which involved a county plow truck striking an illegally parked vehicle.
