Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies were called to a residence on W. Harbor Highway in Cleveland Township. This call came in on 6/27/13 at 2204hrs. It was reported that a 53yr old male was at the home threatening several other people. Upon arrival deputies interviewed the parties involved and the 53yr old male was placed under arrest for domestic violence. During the arrested he attempted to resist but was quickly subdued. The 53yr old suspect who resides at this residence was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail for domestic assault and resisting and obstructing police.
At 2340hrs, deputies responded to a South Walnut Drive residence in Elmwood Township on the report of fight. Upon arrival deputies interviewed several people and determined a 50 yr old male had assaulted a mother and son that resided at the residence. The suspect was arrested for domestic assault and lodged at the Leelanau County Jail.
No serious injuries were reported in either incident.

2 Small children returned home
Leelanau deputies assisted Grand Traverse Band Tribal police in returning two young children to their home Wednesday morning. A passerby called Leelanau Dispatch at 4:27 am and said there were two small girls in the road on Peshawbestown Road who tried to hide as the caller passed by.Officers located the 5 and 7 year old girls and returned them safely to their homes. It appears the adventurous tots snuck out of their homes.
TC woman arrested on GTB warrant
Morgan A. Grant, 22, was arrested in Grand Traverse County Wednesday on a Grand Traverse Band Tribal warrant. She was wanted for Failing to Appear/ Failing to Pay involving a Theft of Property case.She was transported to the Leelanau County jail and remains lodged on $1,000 bond.

Parolee released from prison but taken to jail
A 30 year-old man was released from prison Tuesday but was turned over to Leelanau County corrections officers instead of being set free. Jacob O. Schaub was released from Camp Pugsley in Kingsley after serving 2 years for Home Invasion and 3rd Offense OWI.Schaub was arrested on two Leelanau County bench warrants for unpaid fines and costs totalling $2,534. The fines and costs were assessed after two Operating While Intoxicated convictions from separate arrests in October 2003, less than 2 weeks apart.
Schaub will appear in Circuit Court next week regarding the fines and costs owed.
Lake Leelanau man arrested for OWI
Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies stopped a Leland Township man for driving left of center and driving in the opposing lane after a turn Tuesday night. The man was stopped on S. French Road near E. Duck Lake Road at 10:35 pm. He showed signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tasks given. After refusing the preliminary breath test, he was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated.The driver registered a .17% Datamaster breath test and was refused due to an insufficient air sample on the second test. A search warrant was obtained and the suspect was transported to Munson Medical Center for blood withdrawal.
He remains lodged pending bond being set by the magistrate.

Busy day in Circuit Court Monday
Judge Philip E. Rodgers, Jr. was busy in Circuit Court yesterday and the Leelanau County jail and Department of Corrections are more crowded as a result.Rodgers sentenced Gertrude A. Shorter of Maple City to 16-60 months in prison for killing a 5 year-old boy in July 2012. Shorter, 63, pleaded guilty to Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Impairment or Death. She was the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed Gavin Punter as he rode his tractor/trike next to his grandmother on the shoulder of a Centerville Township road.
Shorter was also ordered to pay $16,015.63 restitution and $1,398 fines and costs.
Tacha M. Milk, 29, was sentenced to prison on two unrelated convictions. Judge Rodgers gave Milk 23-84 months for Delivery of a Controlled Substance and 23-60 months for Attempted Home Invasion 2nd Degree and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
Milk sold drugs to an undercover Traverse Narcotics Team detective in Elmwood Township and later stole a handgun from the Bingham Township residence of an acquaintance. The gun was recovered by the Traverse City Police Department after Milk brandished it at a party.
Raymond J. Stein, 30, was given 6 months in the county jail after pleading guilty to Delivery of a Controlled Substance. Stein, of South Boardman, was arrested in March 2013 on drug delivery charges. He was the last of 4 suspects to be sentenced for selling prescription pills to an undercover TNT officer in Elmwood Township. Stein will also have 24 months of supervision after his release.
Co-defendants Jennifer Stein, Amber Stein and Tyler Morris have already been sentenced. Jennifer, 31, of Fife Lake, received 30 days in jail for possession of drugs. Amber, 27, also of Fife Lake, was given 90 days in jail for drug delivery. Morris, 26, of Bellaire, got 120 days for drug delivery. All will have periods of supervision upon their releases.
Stanley E. Thompson, 72, pleaded guilty to a reduced sex charge Monday. Thompson, of Centerville Township, was originally arrested for 2nd Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct involving sexual activity with a child under 13, a 15 year felony. Judge Rodgers accepted his plea to a reduced charge of CSC 4th degree, a 2 year misdemeanor.
Thompson remains free on bond and will be sentenced July 22.
Leelanau Township man sentenced for shooting grandson's dog
David M. Priest, 70, was sentenced to 45 days in jail by District Court judge Michael Stepka after being found guilty by a jury of Careless Discharge of a Firearm >$50. Leelanau County deputies investigated the report made by Priest's grandson that his grandfather had intentionally shot the grandson's dog. The dog was on Priest's property when it was shot. It was treated by a veterinarian and recovered.The court record indicates that Priest shot at the dog from his deck with 7 1/2 shot as it came onto his property. Priest's grandson lives next door to him and the dog reportedly went onto Priest's property often. He denies trying to hit the dog and testified that if he wanted to hit the dog he would have "shot it in the head".
Priest remains jailed pending an appeal of the conviction by his attorney.
Probation violator arrested
Leelanau County deputies arrested a 20 year-old Centerville Township man Monday for violating probation on his impaired operation conviction. Peter J. Rennie pleaded guilty in December 2012 and was given 1 year probation for a September 2010 crash. He remains jailed pending a Friday District Court appearance.Four arrested on warrants
Four other people were arrested Monday on Grand Traverse and Leelanau County bench warrants. Tribal Police arrested Devon L. Bennett, 23, of Suttons Bay, on Grand Traverse County warrants. He was turned over to GT deputies for transport to their facility.GTB police also brought in Mistyrose Chippewa, 21, Suttons Bay, for Failing to Appear in a GTB truancy matter. She remains lodged on a $300 bond.
A 24 year-old Suttons Bay man was arrested by Tribal Police on a Domestic Violence warrant. The man was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by the victim of the assault, which occurred earlier in the month. He is jailed without bond pending a Tribal Court appearance. The driver, a 25 year-old Suttons Bay woman, was cited for Driving with a Suspended License and released.
Leelanau Corrections officers went to Midland County to pick up Brandon J. Wilson of Midland on a Friend of the Court bench warrant. Wilson, 39, remains jailed with a $581 bond for unpaid child support.
65 year-old woman arrested for assaulting daughter
An Elmwood Township woman was arrested for Domestic Violence Monday after her 47 year-old daughter told Leelanau deputies that her mother pushed, slapped and choked her. Police were called to the home at 3:19 pm in response to a physical confrontation between the mother and daughter.The suspect said that she was arguing with her 63 year-old husband when her daughter walked into the residence. She told her daughter to leave and a physical situation resulted. Neither party was injured or required medical attention.
The arrested woman remains jailed until an appearance before the magistrate.

Summer is here
The summer season has begun and with it, an increase in noise-related complaints received by Leelanau Dispatch. Deputies were sent to 5 fireworks/gunshot reports and 5 loud party/ music/ barking dogs. A 23 year-old Rapid City man was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated Sunday morning. Leelanau County deputies stopped the man for turning into the opposing lane on a side street of Lake Leelanau at 1:13am. He showed signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tasks.He was arrested and given a Datamaster breath test at the jail and his result was .153. He was released after posting interim bond and will appear Friday in District Court.

Tribal police arrest woman for OWI
Grand Traverse Band Tribal Police arrested a 49 year-old Traverse City woman for Operating While Intoxicated Friday at 9:00 pm. The woman was stopped for speeding on N West Bay Shore Drive near Jacobson Road in Suttons Bay Township. She showed signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tasks. She was arrested for OWI and Driving with a Suspended License 2nd or subsequent offense. Her Datamaster breath test result was .08%.She will appear in 86th District Court after posting interim bond.

Business Burglary
The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office responded to a business burglary in Elmwood Township. Deputies responded to an alarm at Korner Gem store at 13031 S. Fisherman Cove in Elmwood Township. Upon arrival deputies found an east side window that was damaged. The building was checked and no one was found inside. The initial investigation found that nothing was missing from inside the business.
A Traverse City Police K-9 Team checked the area for possible suspects but none were found. The investigation is continuing.

Larceny Investigation
The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office is investigating a larceny that occurred in Kasson Township. A home owner living on East Valley Road reported that money was missing from a small home safe.This theft had occurred sometime over the past couple of weeks. Entry to the residence was gained by unknown means. Deputies responded and an investigation is currently on-going.

Prescription Drug Take Back During Senior Expo a Success
Representatives from the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office attended the Senior Expo today which was held at the Sutton's Bay High School. During the Expo seniors were able to dispose of unwanted prescription medications and during the event over five pounds of pills were collected for destruction.
The leelanau Sheriffs Office wants to remind citizens that located in the Lobby of the Sheriff's Office is a prescription drug drop box and it is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for anyone to drop off unwanted prescription medicines. Together we can keep these medications away from people they are not intended for.

Driver Cited for Transporting Open Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle
A Leelanau County Sheriff's Deputy patrolling Manitou Trail just east of Maple City Road on 6/14/13, at 2301hrs, stopped a white SUV which had a headlight out. The driver was identified as a 66yr old woman from Cedar. While speaking with the driver the deputy observed a can of Miller High Life beer in the cup holder of the center console. The beer can which was half full was confiscated and the contents poured out. The driver was determined not to be above the legal limit to drive but she as cited for transporting a open container of alcohol in her vehicle.

Parolee arrested for violation
James M. Lapan of Mesick was arrested by Leelanau County deputies Thursday. He was stopped for nearly causing a crash at W. Traverse Highway near Bay St. at 2:43 pm. A license check showed that Lapan, 41, was not licenced to drive because of numerous drunk driving convictions. He is on parole for 2 Operating While Intoxicated 3rd Offenses out of Wexford County in 2006 and 2007.Lapan was released after posting interim bond pending a District Court hearing for Driving Suspended.

A Suttons Bay man turned himself in at the Leelanau County jail after learning of a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest. Adam M. Krantz, 22, was wanted for an unspecified probation violation. He was convicted of Operating While Intoxicated after being arrested in February 2012.Krantz is being held without bond pending a District Court appearance.

Reported drunk driver located and arrested
A 46 year-old Cedar woman was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated with a High BAC >.17% Wednesday. A call was received at 7:03 pm indicating that a red mustang caused damage as it drove through the grass area at the Greilickville Park. The license plate number was was provided, showing it was registered out of Cedar.Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies were on the lookout for the vehicle and located it on Bellinger Road near Sullivan Road in Solon Township at 8:36 pm. The driver was intoxicated and failed field sobriety tasks. She was arrested and charged with OWI with High BAC after a Datamaster breath test of .19%.

Dog shot by neighbor in Leelanau Township
Leelanau County Dispatch received a call from a Leelanau County resident at 6:55 pm on June 9, 2013. She reported that her dog appeared to have been shot.Leelanau County deputies arrived and determined that one of the two family dogs had been shot. Although there were blood spots on one dog's fur, there was not severe penetration and the owner said she would seek medical attention for the animal the following day during business hours.
The woman said her family had just arrived for the summer season and she let the two dogs loose. They ran to the neighbor's house as they had always done to play with the neighbor dog. She said the previous neighbors had moved but the dogs ran there out of habit.
A short time later she heard what she believed was a gun shot and then heard a second shot some time later. One of the dogs appeared to have been hit with shotgun pellets when it returned home a short time later.
Deputies interviewed the 76 year-old neighbor who said that he and his wife had just moved to the home recently and never met the neighbors. He said the two dogs ran up to his wife who was on the back deck and scared her. She retreated into the residence and shooed the dogs away with her foot as she did so. She said the dogs were complied as she pushed them away and they did not try to bite or attack her.
The man said the dogs returned to his property a short time later so he shot a long distance warning shot at them with a 20 gauge shotgun with number 8 shot. He did not intend to hit the dog, according to his statement to the deputy.
The weapon was confiscated as evidence and the case will be referred to the Leelanau County Prosecutor's office for review. The status of the animal is unknown but the injuries appeared to be superficial in nature.
In an unrelated incident, a Leelanau County jury convicted David M. Priest, 70, of Leelanau Township, last week of Careless Discharge of a Firearm, damage over $50. The trial involved Priest shooting one of his grandson's three dogs that had run onto Priest's property. He denied intentionally shooting at the dogs and said he was firing at chipmunks earlier in the day. The injured dog was treated for pellet injuries and recovered. A 20 gauge shotgun was seized as evidence in the case as well.
Priest will be sentenced Friday June 14 on the the 1 year misdemeanor.
Another Leelanau's Wanted arrested
Christopher A. Cowen, 36, Cedar, was picked up in Grand Traverse County after serving time there on charges there. Cowen, 36, was wanted in Leelanau County for being over $40,000 in arrears for unpaid support payments.
Cowen is being held pending posting of $2,100 bond until a Family Court appearance.
Man severely burned in explosion
Leelanau County Sheriff's Office investigated an explosion that severely burned a Traverse City man and sent him to Grand Rapids for treatment.Gary B. Leonard, 63, was working in a food truck on Pebble Beach Drive in Suttons Bay Township at 9:51 am Saturday, preparing for a catering event. The victim's sister heard the explosion and was able to assist her brother in getting out of the food truck.
Suttons Bay Fire Department and Rescue responded to extinguish the vehicle fire and treat and transport the victim. The victim told rescue personnel that he was lighting a propane stove on the truck when it flashed over and an explosion occurred.

Lake Leelanau woman arrested twice in five days
A 30 year-old Leland Township woman was arrested for the second time in five days on Monday afternoon. She was recognized by a passing Leelanau County deputy who knew her not to have a license. A traffic stop was made on Center Highway near Shady Lane and the driver was arrested again for Driving With a Suspended License 2rd Offense and Driving Without Security.Deputies arrested the same woman on June 6 after a different deputy recognized her, also knowing she did not have a valid license. Driving Suspended 2nd Offense is punishable by up to 1 year in jail. The woman again posted $100 interim bond before seeing the magistrate.
Bond violation lands man in jail again
A Suttons Bay man was jailed Monday for violating bond conditions on Domestic Violence 2nd offense. Teodoro R. Garcia, 32, violated his $25,000 personal recognizance bond and is jailed without bond pending future court hearings. He is accused of assaulting the mother of his child on May 27, 2013.Coincidentally, the victim in the domestic violence case is the defendant in the above-mentioned Driving Suspended case.

Drunk driver involved in single car crash
A 29 year-old Elmwood Township man was uninjured when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a power pole Sunday. The crash was reported at 9:28 pm on E. Lakeview Hills Road near Co. Road 633. An investigation by Leelanau County deputies showed the man's blood alcohol was nearly 3 times the legal limit at the time of the crash. Deputies manned several weekend events
Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies were busy working extra details over the weekend as the summer season got underway. Six officers worked the bike portion of the M-22 Challenge at key intersections on the 17 mile course. Marine deputies were on Little Glen Lake for the kayak portion of the race in addition to four National Park Service Rangers in the Dune Climb area. 900 participants were involved in the event and there were no crashes or injuries reported. The M-22 Challenge paid for the manpower assigned to the race.A deputy was also assigned to the inaugural Leland Harbor Run 5K race/walk in Leland. 40 participants ran and walked the course in Leland to benefit Leland Harbor dredging and Leland/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's cross county program.
Two deputies were assigned to the Leland Wine Festival, held in the Leland Harbor parking lot. The event was well-attended, with no police action needed. State Liquor Control Commission funds were used to pay for the officers to be at the event and scheduled road strength was no reduced.
Kingsley woman arrested on bench warrant
A 27 year-old woman wanted on an OWI bench warrant was arrested in Grand Traverse County Saturday. Santonya R. Winstone was transported to the Leelanau County jail and is being held on $2,000 bond. A 24 year-old Lake Leelanau man was arrested for domestic violence early Saturday morning at his home. Leelanau Dispatch received a call from the victim at 12:44 am. She said that she and her boyfriend were arguing and he spit in her face.Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies responded and interviewed both parties and witnesses that were around the campfire when the incident happened. The man was arrested after the investigation was conducted. His blood alcohol content was .243% at the scene.

Lake Leelanau woman cited for suspended driving
A 30 year-old woman will be in District Court for driving with a suspended license. She was observed driving on E Duck Lake Road near Sylt Road at 1:41 pm Thursday. A deputy knew the suspect did not have a valid license after dealing with her as a domestic assault victim a week prior.The woman was taken into custody and is being charged with Driving with License Suspended Third Offense and Driving without Security. Interim bond was posted by the suspect who will appear in District Court Friday.

Elmwood Township man seriously injured in mowing accident
Leelanau County deputies were the first to respond to the report of a man being injured in a riding lawnmower accident on S. Bay View Court Tuesday. The mower rolled over and severely injured the 63 year-old driver's arm. Deputies reassured the victim and rendered aid by applying pressure above the injury to reduce severe bleeding until Elmwood Township Rescue and NorthFlight Paramedics arrived.Paramedics applied a tourniquet enroute to Munson Medical Center. The victim survived the accident but lost his arm below the elbow as a result. Residents are reminded of the potential dangers of lawn and garden work. Dozing driver crashes
A Northport man told Leelanau deputies that he dozed off before leaving the roadway and crashing into some trees. Darnell C. Williams, 26, was northbound on W West Bay Shore Drive near Lee Point Road in Bingham Township at 2:59 pm Monday. His vehicle crossed the southbound lane and left the roadway, crashing into some trees and brush. A witness that was following Williams said the vehicle drifted off the roadway for no apparent reason.Williams refused treatment for possible injuries and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Texas driver arrested for OWI
A 25 year-old Texas man learned that driving with an open alcohol container is not allowed in Leelanau County Michigan. Deputies stopped the man on W Empire Highway near Kitlinger at 9:27 pm Monday for driving left of center. Upon contact, the Leelanau deputy observed an open beer can between the driver's leg. The driver surrendered an unopened can of beer as well.The driver said he just got off work at an establishment in a nearby town and had some drinks before driving home. He was asked to perform field sobriety tasks and was subsequently arrested for Operating While Intoxicated and Transporting Open Intoxicants. He remains jailed awaiting a bond being set.

A 19 year-old Traverse City woman was stopped for defective equipment at 3:43 am Sunday morning. The stop occurred on S West Bay Shore Drive near Lee Point Road in Bingham Township. The driver smelled of intoxicants and showed signs of intoxication.She failed field sobriety tasks given and refused to take a preliminary breath test. Centerville Township man arrested for being disorderly
Leelanau Dispatch was called at 3:56 am Sunday regarding a man yelling behind a house on S French Road. The caller was concerned that the man may be injured and calling for help.Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies responded and made contact with a 34 year-old man who's family owns property nearby. The man was in a utility shed behind the original caller's home. The man did not respond to the homeowners calls offering assistance and did not answer when police yelled for him to identify himself.
The deputies banged on the shed door and the man responded "It's me". Officers made the situation safe and discovered the highly intoxicated man totally wet and not making sense. It appears he got lost after getting stuck while driving his truck on his family property. He was unclear if he was driving for pleasure or farm work.

Afternoon crash lands man in jail for OWI
A 4:50 pm rollover crash Sunday ended in a 26 year-old man in jail. The crash occurred on S Newman Road in Kasson Township. The Traverse City man denied drinking and said he was unfamiliar with the roads and that is why he crashed.Deputies smelled intoxicants on his breath and he failed field sobriety tasks given. He was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated and was released on bond pending a District Court appearance Friday.

Nigerian Fraud successful again
A Suttons Bay Township resident reported that she sent $1,400 to get her son-in-law out of jail in Florida. The fraudster had enough information about the son-in-law to convince the woman that he was legitimately in need of the money to be released from jail. The woman learned later that her son-in-law had not been arrested.Citizens are reminded to beware of such fraud attempts involving children or grandchildren being arrested or involved in accidents overseas. Know where family members are and plan ahead by having a code word or plan to determine the legitimacy of such attempts. Requests to have the funds sent by Money Gram, Western Union or Walmart Moneycards are red flags of fraud.

Stranded motorist was suspended
A man that Leelanau County deputies stopped to assist ended up having a suspended license.The 23 year-old was broken down on W. Empire Highway near S Coleman Road in Kasson Township. He was alone and was driving the vehicle when it failed. A license check showed that his privileges were suspended.
He was given 10 days to contact the court after the deputy made sure he had help on the way.
Traverse City man arrested for bond violation
Robert J. Shindorf, 32, was arrested at 9:00 pm Friday in Traverse City for failing a court-ordered preliminary breath test. Shindorf was ordered to take twice daily PBTs after his May 24 arrest for OWI by Grand Traverse Band tribal police. He remains lodged without bond pending a Friday court appearance.Driver arrested after hit and run accident
A 36 year-old Suttons Bay man was arrested for 3rd Offense Operating While Intoxicated after a crash investigation Friday. A two car crash occurred on Richter Road and Eckerle Road in the Village of Suttons Bay at 9:57 pm. One of the drivers left the scene after the crash and the vehicle description was given to Leelanau Dispatch.A Leelanau County Sheriff's deputy saw a truck fitting the description given pulling into a residence on Richter Road as he travelled to the accident scene. After arriving at the scene, ensuring the remaining driver was not injured and completing the investigation, he went to the Richter Road residence. Contact was made with the driver of the truck who admitted to being involved in the crash, having a suspended license and having 3 shots and a beer before driving.
After sobriety field tasks were administered, the man was arrested for OWI and DWLS. He had two prior drunk driving convictions and previous driving suspended convictions as well. He is free on personal recognizance bond of $5,000 pending a Friday court appearance.
OWI arrest made after citizen call
Leelanau Dispatch received a call at 11:35 pm Friday which said a white pickup was being driven by a man who appeared to be intoxicated. The vehicle was last seen entering Suttons Bay on S West Bay Shore Drive from the south.A Leelanau County deputy located the truck as it turned west onto E Duck Lake Road. Erratic driving was observed and the vehicle was stopped on Horn Road. The 20 year-old Suttons Bay Township man was in possession of alcohol in the vehicle and showed signs of intoxication.
Field sobriety tasks were given and the man was arrested for OWI/ Zero Tolerance >.02%. He has a prior alcohol offense in Texas. His 13 year-old nephew who was a passenger was turned over to a relative. The driver was released on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond pending a District Court appearance.
