Alert patrons help solve break in

Two Traverse City men are in jail thanks to alert patrons and employees at the Cedar Tavern.  They called Leelanau Dispatch at 10:39 pm Monday to report that a suspicious vehicle had backed into the Tavern lot and a man dressed in black had walked over to the Blue Moon Ice Cream Shop across the street.

They watched the man break the front window, reach in and grab something and return to the car.  Witnesses were unsure what was removed from Blue Moon but were able to get the license plate number and vehicle description before the car left towards Maple City on E Bellinger Road.

Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the area to investigate the crime scene and search the area for the suspect vehicle.  While they were inspecting the break-in, a vehicle that matched the description given by witnesses at Cedar Tavern drove by slowly and parked on Sullivan St.  Deputies approached the vehicle and discovered that the registration plate matched the one given by witnesses.

The men, 22 and 23, were taken into custody for suspicion of Breaking and Entering and the driver for Operating with a Suspended License.  The man who is believed to have broken into the building was uncooperative and was nearly Tasered.  The driver gave an admission to deputies that they drove from Traverse City and his passenger told him he was going into Bunting's Market.  The man returned a short time later with a cash register and told the driver to "get out of here".

The driver said he drove west of Cedar and his passenger walked into the woods with the cash register and returned without it.  It is believed that $13 was taken in the break-in.  A tracking dog from Traverse City Police Department was unable to find the cash register.  Further efforts to find it will be made Tuesday morning.

Both men remain jailed on felony charges pending bonds being set by the magistrate.  Breaking and Entering is a 10 year felony.

Coincidentally, earlier in the day at 5:14 pm, a citizen saw a truck veer off the road in front of Blue Moon Ice Cream, jump over the curb and hit a trash can.  No one was injured, nor was there any damage from the mishap.
