ALL QUIET IN LEELANAU COUNTY

No incidents of note to report. Despite heavy winter weather for the past 24 hours, there have not been any crashes with injuries reported.

LEELANAU TOWNSHIP MAN ARRESTED FOR SCRAP THEFTS

A 23 year old Leelanau Township man was arrested for breaking and entering after admitting to a deputy that he broke in and stole scrap metal from two township businesses in November.  After stealing the metal, he sold it to a Traverse City salvage company.  The man is in the Leelanau County Jail until a bond is set by the magistrate.

WELFARE CHECK RESULTS IN AMBULANCE RUN

A welfare check resulted in a trip to Munson Medical Center for a 47 year old Leland Township woman.  A concerned party called the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office to report that the woman sounded despondent.  When a deputy arrived at 10:33 am, he found the woman to be intoxicated with a .40 blood alcohol level.  Leland Rescue was summoned and transported the patient to the hospital for treatment.

DOMESTIC ASSAULT ARREST

A 15 year old Solon Township youth was turned over to Family Court volunteers after being taken into custody for Domestic Violence.  The suspect's mother called the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office to report that her son "broke her arm again".  Although her arm was not broken, deputies determined that she was assaulted by her son and he was taken into custody for domestic assault.

DRIVER ARRESTED WHILE LOOKING FOR DOG

A 27 year old Empire Township man was arrested for driving with a suspended license at 6:05 pm on Maple City Road near Valley Road.  He was driving in the area while he and a friend were attempting to catch a friend's dog that was running loose along the roadway.  It was determined that his driving privileges were suspended so he was taken into custody and transported to the Leelanau County Jail. 

ARIZONA WOMAN REPORTS FRAUD

A Mesa, AZ woman reported that she received a $3000 cashier's check from a Cleveland Township woman who she did not know.  The Arizona woman did not know why the check was sent to her and said there were instructions asking her to cash the check, keep a portion of the money, and wire the remaining funds by Western Union to a third subject. 

This is a common Nigerian fraud where the Cleveland Township's identity was unknowingly used as the source and sender of the counterfeit check.  It was sent by fraudsters likely from Canada.  The fraud was to convince the Mesa, AZ woman to cash the check so she could receive a small portion for her troubles.  She would then wire the remainder to a fictitious person who could pick up the money anywhere in the world. 

Citizens are warned not to cash any checks that are received unexpectedly.  The bank will hold the person who cashes such a check financially responsible for the amount when the counterfeit check does not clear.  Like the saying goes, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

WEATHER AFFECTS ROADS AND DRIVING BUT NO INJURY ACCIDENTS

There were 5 property damage accidents and nine reports of vehicles stuck along the roadway or ditch but no personal injury accidents reported.

ARRESTED

BENNY NMN LOPEZ, 23, surrendered on charges of larceny in a building.  Bond was set at $10,000 personal recognizance.

DRIVER ARRESTED

A 42 year old Illinois woman was arrested for operating while intoxicated after her car slid off the road into some mailboxes.  The incident occurred in the 1600 block of SW Bay Shore Drive at 12:48 am.

WEATHER DOMINATES THE COUNTY

Heavy wet snow kept traffic and all activity to a minimum.  There was a 2 car property damage accident and 4 vehicles in ditches/ motorist assists.

RETAIL FRAUD REPORTED

A Solon Township business reported a 24 year old suspect stole a Red Bull energy drink and does so regularly.  Deputies are investigating.

ARRESTED

JUDE M NOWINSKI, 36, Lake Leelanau.  Arrested for failure to appear on attempted resisting arrest charges.

FLEEING SUSPECT CAUGHT

A 26 year old Suttons Bay man was arrested after a lengthy foot chase by Grand Traverse Band Tribal officers.  Neegonquet Fox ran from officers who were trying to arrest him on misdemeanor probation violation charges at 10:30 am yesterday.  Fox ran west from Grand Traverse Band housing on Peshawbestown Road.  Deputies from the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office and the Suttons Bay Police chief created a perimeter to prevent the suspect from eluding capture.  Fox was arrested without resistance after an approximate 15 minute foot chase.  He is lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.


DRUNK DRIVER ARRESTED

An 81 year old Solon Township man was arrested for operating while intoxicated at 1:07 pm yesterday.  A citizen called Leelanau County Dispatch to report the suspect driving erratically and in the wrong lane.  A Leelanau County officer located the vehicle on Cedar Rd. south of Cedar and determined the driver was operating intoxicated.  The suspect was arrested and lodged on operating while intoxicated.


SEARCH NETS EVIDENCE

Deputies from Leelanau County Sheriff's officers assisted detectives from Traverse City Police Department and Grand Traverse County yesterday in Solon Township.  Detectives had a search warrant for the residence of a breaking and entering suspect.  The search netted evidence related to a breaking and entering at Pleva's Meats on December 17, 2012.  Over $500 in cash was stolen in the break in.  All cases remain under investigation and no arrests have been made.


2 CAR CRASH LANDS DRIVER IN JAIL

A two car crash in Solon Township resulted in one driver being arrested for driving without a license.  The accident happened at 3:34 pm on W. Traverse Highway near Solon Rd.  No injuries were reported but when deputies checked the driving status of a 20 year old man from New Mexico it was learned that he had not acquired a driver's license and was operating the vehicle without security.  The suspect was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

Description

Vehicle 1 was eastbound on M-72 and slid sideways into the westbound lane, striking Vehicle 2 head on.  Vehicle 1 then struck westbound Vehicle 3.
