Two arrested and returned to Leelanau County

Leelanau County corrections officers travelled to Gratiot County Monday to retrieve two subjects who were arrested there on Leelanau County warrants.

Nancy A. Shomin, 49, of Grand Rapids, was returned to the County on 2 Circuit Colurt probation violation warrants stemming from an Operating While Intoxicated 3rd offense conviction.

Shomin was arrested in February 2010 in Centerville Township and later pleaded guilty to the felony charge.  She remains in the Leelanau County jail pending a Circuit Court appearance.

Kurt A. Hettler, 54, formerly of Northport, was being held in Gratiot County on two Leelanau County warrants.  He failed to appear in 2005 for 2 show cause hearings that were scheduled to determine why he hadn't paid fines and costs as ordered as part of his probation.

Hettler, now of Wildwood, GA. was arrested for Operating Under the Influence of Intoxicants and Driving while License Suspended in Elmwood Township in 2004.  Hettler remained at large until his arrest in Gratiot County.  He remains jailed pending a District Court appearance or payment of the previously assessed fines and costs.

Lake Leelanau man asks for his own bond revocation

Brandon J. Schaub, 31, surrended at the Leelanau County jail Monday after making arrangements in Circuit Court to have his bond returned so he could be lodged.

Schaub was arrested and charged with felony Operating while Intoxicated in March 2013 in Centerville Township after driving his vehicle in the ditch.  His Datamaster breath test results were .26%.  He remains jailed and will get credit for time served going forward against any jail or prison sentence if convicted.

Suspicious package is actually a weather transponder

Leelanau County deputies and Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore rangers responded to the report of a suspicious package Monday.  It was located off the shoulder of Voice Road near LaCore St in Empire Township.

A park ranger was first to respond at 4:15 pm and believed it was similar to a weather transponder he had located in the park in the past.  The instruments are used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for a variety of weather tracking purposes.

Glen Arbor/ Empire Township fire department was also dispatched and assisted in keeping the area free of citizens until it could be determined that the item was not an explosive of some sort.  The ranger was able to photograph the item and upload the image to NOAA.  Officials there confirmed that they believed it was one of their weather transponders which all eventually come down somewhere when the floatation device used to keep them airborne fails.

The item will be returned to NOAA by park rangers.

Two drunk drivers arrested Tuesday morning

Leelanau County deputies arrested two drivers for Operating while Intoxicated in separate incidents Tuesday.  The first resulted from the traffic stop of a 21 year-old Interlochen man on S. West Bay Shore Drive in Elmwood Township at 2:00 am.  He was stopped for a traffic violation and failed field sobriety tasks.  He was arrested and his 18 year old passenger was cited for being a Minor in Possession of Alcohol and was released.  The driver's Datamaster results were .15% & .14%.

The second arrest occurred at 2:29 am on S. West Bay Shore Drive near Revold Rd. in Bingham Township.  A 21 year-old Lake Leelanau man was arrested for OWI after being stopped and failing field sobriety tests.  He had a Datamaster result of .11%.

Both men remain lodged pending bonds being set by the magistrate.
