Man arrested for OWI after hit and run
Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies located and arrested a 27 year-old Traverse City man after he struck a pedestrian and left the scene.The crash occurred on Pearl St. and Second St. in Leland at 4:29 pm Sunday. 14 year-old Carson A. Rosa of Cedar was walking with several other teens on Pearl St. when the group noticed a westbound Jeep that left the roadway and was out of control. They were along a guardrail at Second St. and all but Rosa were able to jump over the rail to avoid being hit. Rosa was struck by the Jeep and was later transported to Munson Medical Center by Leland Rescue.
The pedestrians told law enforcement that it was a yellow Jeep that was out of control and hit their friend. They last saw it headed south on Main St.
Leelanau 911 was called and deputies were given a vehicle description to attempt to locate the vehicle. A citizen called in that the vehicle was on S. Manitou Trail passing Duck Lake Road and had a flat rear tire. A deputy headed north from Glen Arbor and located the vehicle in southern Leland Township with one tire completely gone and driving on a rim.
The driver was contacted and appeared intoxicated. He said he was coming from a wedding in Leland and knew that he had lost a tire. He failed field sobriety tasks and was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated 2nd offense, having been convicted of OWI in 2009. His datamaster breath test results were .16%.
Cyclist lucky after hitting pickup truck
A Brighton teen suffered minor injuries after running into the side of a truck Sunday. Thomas P. Porlick, 17, was riding his bike west on the TART trail in Elmwood Township at 4:50 pm. His brakes didn't function as he attempted to stop where the trail crosses Lake Leelanau Drive north of Fouch Road. The bike went into the road and struck the passenger side of a northbound pickup driven by Clinton H. Johnson. Johnson, 57, Interlochen, said the bicyclist ran into the side of his truck and he did not see the bike in time to avoid a collision. He was not cited.Porlick was not wearing a helmet but was transported for multiple hand and finger injuries by Northflight Rescue.
Lake Leelanau driver misses the deer but not the trees
A 49 year-old Lake Leelanau woman was taken to Munson Medical Center after her vehicle left the road and struck a group of trees Thursday. Roxanna M. Polhamus was travelling north on S Lake Leelanau Drive near S Maple Valley Road at 9:40 pm when a deer ran into the road. Polhamus swerved to avoid the deer but her vehicle went off the road and struck some trees.The driver was wearing a safety belt and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Three drunk drivers arrested over the holiday weekend
Leelanau County deputies arrested three drivers for Operating While Intoxicated recently. The Leland Township contract deputy arrested two on Tuesday and Saturday. A 70 year-old man was arrested in downtown Leland at 3:37 pm last Tuesday after a motorist called in his vehicle driving erratically on S West Bay Shore Drive in Bingham Township. The Leland deputy located the suspect vehicle and observed erratic driving. After field sobriety tasks were given, the man was arrested for OWI. He was released after posting bond.The second Leland Township arrest happened Saturday at 9:26pm on N Lake Leelanau Drive near Horn. A vehicle was stopped for failing to dim bright lights and the 56 year-old Lake Leelanau woman showed signs of intoxication. She failed field sobriety tasks and a preliminary breath test, although she told the deputy that she put hand lotion into her mouth to mask the alcohol of odor. She later realized the hand cream had alcohol in it.
She was arrested for OWI and was released after posting bond. She will appear in District Court later this week.
A 35 year-old Elmwood Township man was arrested Sunday at 8:20pm after a fellow motorist called Leelanau dispatch to report erratic driving. A deputy was in position to locate the suspect vehicle as it came to S West Bay Shore Drive on Carter Road. After observing a traffic violation, the deputy stopped the vehicle in a local business lot.
The man failed field sobriety tasks and was taken into custody for OWI. He posted bond pending a District Court appearance.
Suspended driver cited after being stopped for speeding
Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies stopped a 28 year-old Cedar Run Road man for speeding at 8:39 am Thursday. The stop occurred on W Traverse Highway near Bugai Road. A driver's license checked showed that the driver's privileges had been suspended. He was cited and given a court date. He and his wife who had a valid license swapped seats and she was able to drive their vehicle away.Man arrested again for no contact violation
Douglas D. Goodrich, 33, was arrested Thursday for violating terms of his probation which state he is to have no contact with his wife or to be at their marital home. The Leelanau County Magistrate received a tip that Goodrich was at the home in Bingham Township at 4:38 pm. Deputies responded and found him there. He told them he was watching his children for his wife, although she was there as well.He was arrested for violating probation and a personal protection order that is in place. He was released on $100 personal recognizance bond after a Friday District Court appearance.
Elmwood Township man arrested for Domestic Assault
Michigan State Police arrested a 45 year-old man after he and his wife fought at their Elmwood Township home. Leelanau Dispatch was called at 3:30 pm Saturday. The two were arguing over car keys and physical violence occured. The man was released on $1500 personal recognizance bond with a no contact order with his wife and the marital home. A Friday District Court appearance is scheduled.Recent Leelanau County arrests and bookings
Nebin M. Floyd, 35, Mt. Pleasant. Arrested in Isabella County on Friend of the Court bench warrant. Floyd will serve 60 days in jail if $600 bond is not posted pursuant to an earlier court order. Current arrearages are $2415.John H. Chippewa, 45, Suttons Bay. Arrested on Grand Traverse Band bench warrant for failure to appear for a Driving While License Suspended arraignment. Chippewa was taken before Tribal Court and the matter was adjudicated with a $200 fine and credit for 2 days served in jail.
Michael M. Steikar, 49, Grand Rapids. Arrested in Kent County on Friend of the Court bench warrant. Family Court judge forgave $39,390 in arrearages and instituted $858 now due. Steikar was released after posting $350 bond on two cases.
Mackenzie A. Kasuske, 23, Traverse City. Surrendered on District Court bench warrant for bond violation. The violation alleges that Kasuske had contact with a Domestic Violence victim he was ordered to have no communication with. Bond was revoked and he remains jailed.
