Stolen gun recovered at Leelanau Township home

An anonymous tip to the Grand Traverse County dispatch center has taken a reported stolen and unregistered handgun off of the streets.  Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office requested assistance from Leelanau County in contacting the residents at a Leelanau Township home yesterday.  The anonymous information was that there was an unregistered .22 caliber pistol there.

Leelanau deputies responded and seized the weapon from the husband and wife there.  The serial number on the gun had been entered as stolen in Alabama.  Investigators are attempting to confirm with Alabama authorities if the confiscated gun is actually the one reported as stolen there.  Regardless of whether the weapon was actually stolen or not, it will be confiscated for being unregistered.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

Unannounced home visit by probation officer leads to heroin seizure

A surprise home visit by a hard-working Circuit Court probation officer has resulted in a drug conviction for a 23 year-old Cedar man.  Dylan J. Williams is on probation after being convicted of Delivery of Marihuana in Grand Traverse County in November 2012.

The probation case was transferred to Williams' home county and Leelanau's probation/parole agent Steve Brett made an unannounced home visit at Williams' Solon Township residence.  Accompanied by a Michigan State Police trooper, Agent Brett observed Williams putting a package into his vehicle that Williams admitted contained approximately 4 grams of heroin.

Other drugs, nitrous oxide canisters and drug paraphernalia were seized from the house after a search.  Williams was arrested and charged with the drug possession and pleaded guilty to Use of Heroin, a one year misdemeanor with a maximum $2,000 fine.  He was sentenced to 46 days in jail with continued probation and drug testing.

Little of this, a little of that.................

Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies stayed busy Wednesday speaking to an out of control 7 year-old at the request of his mother, checked on the report of a hazardous hole in the road in a construction zone north of Suttons Bay and wrangled a runaway horse on Lake St. in Glen Arbor.  They also investigated someone walking along S West Bay Shore Drive with a flashlight at 12:35 am that turned out to be a woman walking her dog and the report of deer shiners in Leland Township.

Residents are reminded that it is legal to shine deer until 11 pm year 'round with the exception of November, when it is illegal to shine at all.

Deer on the move in Leelanau County
