Autopsy reveals no foul play

A pathologist who performed an autopsy on a 10 month-old boy who died Monday has tentatively determined that the death is SIDS.  Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby. A final determination of death will not be made until toxicology results are received and reviewed by the pathologist.

Leelanau 911 was contacted Monday at 11:50 am by a Solon Township woman who stated that there was an infant not breathing.  Dispatch guided the woman through infant CPR and a Leelanau County Sheriff's Office deputy arrived approximately 3 minutes later.  The deputy continued the CPR until Cedar Rescue arrived.  The baby was transported to Munson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation by Leelanau County Sheriff's Office showed no foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.  The name of the victim is not being released out of respect for the family and individuals involved.

Man charged with drunken weapon possession arrested again

The 43 year-old Kasson Township man arrested last week after firing a handgun to relieve stress has been arrested again.  Brian A. Davis was intoxicated when he was arrested last Thursday after his mother reported she believed he had fired a gun in the basement of their home.  Davis told Leelanau County deputies that he shot his handgun outside the residence to relieve stress.

After being released on bond, Davis was arrested the following day for violating terms of his probation by consuming alcohol.  He pleaded guilty to that probation violation in District Court Friday and was released on $5000/10% bond.

At 11:07 am Tuesday, Davis' mother called again to report that he was "acting out".  When deputies responded, they determined that he has again consumed alcohol.  He admitted that he stopped at a gas station after passing his court ordered PBT earlier in the morning and purchased beer.

Davis remains jailed pending another bond hearing.

Deputy locates toddler walkaway

An alert Leelanau County Sheriff's deputy returned a 3 year-old boy to his mother after discovering him crying along Kasson St. in Cedar.  The deputy found the boy walking north out of Cedar at 4:18 pm Tuesday.  After a short investigation it was learned that the toddler had climbed out of the family car while his mother was in Pleva's Meats and began to walk home.

Mother and child were reunited by the officer.

Woman arrested on 8 year old warrant

A 28 year-old Grand Rapids woman who was gone from Leelanau County but not forgotten was arrested in Grand Traverse County Tuesday.  Jenica J. Kanouse was transported to the Leelanau County jail where she remains jailed with a $200 bond pending a District Court appearance.

Kanouse was originally charged with being a Minor in Possession of Alcohol/ 3rd offense in the summer of 2005 when she was 20 years old.  She failed to appear on the Grand Traverse Band Tribal Police case on September 2, 2005 and a bench warrant was issued.  The charge carries a maximum 60 day jail term and $500 fine.
