LCSO marine patrol assists grounded boaters
Stormy seas caused a pleasure boat to become grounded Saturday night in Grand Traverse Bay. A 33 year-old Cicero Indiana man and 5 passengers were returning to Suttons Bay from having dinner at an Elmwood Township restaurant on Grand Traverse Bay. The wind picked up as they were rounding Stony Point at approximately 9:30 pm. The man said he was unable to see the buoy and the 21 foot vessel ran aground on the rocks. No one was injured and alcohol was not a factor in the incident. There was not any fuel leakage from the crash and no ticket was issued.A salvage boat that was summoned to the scene became stuck on the rocks as well so the Leelanau County Marine patrol assisted by freeing the salvage boat and transporting the stranded boaters to shore safely. Their boat remained where it ran aground until the wind died down the following day, allowing the salvage company to retrieve it safely.
