Arrest made in hit and run of Empire home
A 28 year-old Empire man was arrested Sunday after a warrant was issued for his arrest involving an unreported crash on August 16. He is accused of running through a stop sign at the intersection of MacFarlane Road and S. Glen Lake Road in Empire Township and crashing. The vehicle went airborne and hit a home before crashing into the homeowner's yard. The driver fled the scene but Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies were able to later identify him.After his arrest the man admitted to having the accident and not reporting it but denied drinking or being under the influence. He posted $100 interim bond pending a Friday District Court appearance.
Grand Rapids woman hurt in cycle crash
A Sunday crash sent a 58 year-old motorcyclist to Munson Medical Center. Jean Matievich was driving north on N. Manitou Trail south of E Duck Lake Road at 10:42 am when she drove off the right shoulder of the road while negotiating a curve. Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies reported that the 2008 Kawasaki laid on it's side, damaging the cycle and injuring Matievich.Leland Rescue transported her to Munson Medical Center for her injuries which were not life-threatening. Alcohol was not a factor and no enforcement action was taken.
Speeder stopped, passenger cited for MIP
Leelanau deputies stopped a 23 year-old Traverse City man for speeding on S West Bay Shore Drive in Elmwood Township at 1:04 am Sunday. He told deputies he had just picked up his girlfriend at a party in Leelanau County where she had been drinking and didn't want to drive.It was a good call by the woman, except that she was only 20 years old. The passenger was issued a citation for being a Minor in Possession of Alcohol and her boyfriend was given a verbal warning for excessive speed.
Estranged husband arrested for domestic violence
A 35 year-old Traverse City man was arrested Saturday morning for domestic assault. Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies investigated the report which was received at 11:25 am in Solon Township. The woman that lives there said she and her husband are in the process of a divorce and their three children were with her husband for the weekend. He has relocated to Traverse City as a result of the divorce proceedings.He came to the marital home and said he needed additional clothes for the children. He said he was invited in but his wife said he walked in uninvited. He became angry when he saw a pair of men's shoes inside the front door and accused the woman of infidelity. He confronted his wife about another man being in the home and she said she was alone.
The husband searched the house and discovered a locked bathroom door. His wife tried to block the door and he physically moved her out of the way so he could break the door down. After doing so, he found a man drying off after showering. The showering man was not assaulted.
The husband was arrested for Domestic Violence Second Offense and was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond. He will appear in District Court Friday.
Suttons Bay man arrested on TC warrant
Leelanau County deputies responded to a call on S Shore Drive in Suttons Bay Sunday at 3:32 am. A male caller said that he was "trying to get away" and had a broken ankle. When deputies arrived, the matter was discovered to have been unfounded, although there was a misdemeanor warrant for another man at the scene.Angel S. Gonzalez, 19, was arrested on a Traverse City Police warrant for Driving While Suspended and Failing to Stop at the Scene of a Crash. He was taken to the Leelanau County jail and then picked up by TCPD.
