Dozing driver crashes

A Northport man told Leelanau deputies that he dozed off before leaving the roadway and crashing into some trees.  Darnell C. Williams, 26, was northbound on W West Bay Shore Drive near Lee Point Road in Bingham Township at 2:59 pm Monday.  His vehicle crossed the southbound lane and left the roadway, crashing into some trees and brush.  A witness that was following Williams said the vehicle drifted off the roadway for no apparent reason.

Williams refused treatment for possible injuries and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Texas driver arrested for OWI

A 25 year-old Texas man learned that driving with an open alcohol container is not allowed in Leelanau County Michigan.  Deputies stopped the man on W Empire Highway near Kitlinger at 9:27 pm Monday for driving left of center.  Upon contact, the Leelanau deputy observed an open beer can between the driver's leg.  The driver surrendered an unopened can of beer as well.

The driver said he just got off work at an establishment in a nearby town and had some drinks before driving home.  He was asked to perform field sobriety tasks and was subsequently arrested for Operating While Intoxicated and Transporting Open Intoxicants.  He remains jailed awaiting a bond being set.
