TC teen helps save woman

A quick thinking Traverse City youth may have saved a woman he found laying next to her vehicle.  She was in a private drive on W Traverse Highway across from Carter Road.  He called 911 at 8:38 pm to report that the woman was "frozen" and disoriented.  The temperature was approximately 27 degrees at the time.

A deputy arrived minutes later and helped the 53 year old Cedar woman into his patrol car to warm up until paramedics arrived.  Medical personnel determined her core temperature was 91 degrees, even after having been in the patrol car for approximately 5 minutes.

The woman said she was house sitting at that location and was walking to her car to drive home to Cedar.  She didn't know how long she had been laying on the ground and it was not known why she was not able to get into her vehicle.  She was transported to Munson Medical Center for evaluation and treatment.

Traverse City man jailed for illegal hunting

David Farrick Walston, 17, of Traverse City was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to Taking Game or a Protected Animal today.  Walston and Daniel Lynn Kelsey, 21, of Lake Ann were arrested in Leelanau and Grand Traverse Counties and charged with multiple conservation law violations.  Walston admitted to killing a deer with a spotlight out of season in Kasson Township and DNR officials say he and Walston are responsible for at least 7 deer and a bear being poached in the two counties.

Walston was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 90 days in the Leelanau County jail and ordered to pay $1000 restitution for the illegally killed deer and $1000 fine.  He also lost his hunting privileges in Michigan.

Kelsey remains on bond pending resolution of his charges in 86th District Court.
