Icy roads closes some schools

Rain and freezing temperatures have caused Northport and Suttons Bay Schools to close today.  Glen Lake Community Schools, Leland and Lake Leelanau St. Mary's are on 2 hour delays.  Traverse City Schools are in session and deputies responded to 3 TCAPS buses that were stuck in Elmwood and Solon Townships due to icy road conditions.  The Leelanau County Road Commission responded to sand the areas.

Charges sought in unreported crash

A crash that was reported by a passerby at 8:07 am may lead to charges against a 23 year old Leland man.  A southbound car left the roadway and rolled over into the ditch on N Manitou Trail just south of Sugarbush Lane in Leland Township.  No one associated with the vehicle was at the crash site when a deputy arrived.  The driver reported the crash later that afternoon at 1:30 pm and said he swerved to avoid a deer 12 hours earlier at 1:00 am.  The case has been presented to the prosecutor's office for review with a failure to report an accident charge being requested.

Lake Leelanau drive off solved

Deputies located a 34 year old Suttons Bay Township woman who drove off without paying for fuel from the Lake Leelanau BP Station.  An employee at the gas station reported the drive off at 8:35 am and gave a vehicle description and registration.  50 minutes later, a caller on French Road reported that a female who he did not know had stopped at his house and was acting strange.

Deputies responded and determined it was the vehicle which had driven off from the BP station.  Because of the women's behavior, deputies requested Leland Rescue to evaluate her.  Her boyfriend agreed to return to the gas station and pay for the fuel as well as seek treatment for her.

Fire damages Kasson Township home

A chimney fire reported at 10:42 pm damaged the attic of a home but there were no injuries.  The two occupants were out of the residence when fire crews from the Cedar, Glen Arbor, Leland and Elmira Fire Departments responded.

Suttons Bay man arrested

A 37 year old Suttons Bay Township man was arrested by Traverse City police for a friend of the court warrant.  The man was tranferred to the Leelanau County Jail and was released after posting $2,500 bond.

Caller reports hunters

4 pickup trucks with hunters and dogs were reported to Leelanau County Dispatch at 10:58 am.  The hunters were along Duck Lake Road in Leland Township and were believed to be coyote hunting according to the caller.  The DNR conservation officer was made aware of the situation.

Money missing in Maple City

$40 along with identification and a money clip was reported taken from a Kasson Township kitchen.  There were no signs of forced entry and deputies are investigating.

Home Invasion suspect arrested

A 19 year old Traverse City woman was arrested in Ogemaw County on a Leelanau County statewide felony warrant.  She was picked up by Leelanau County deputies and released after she was given a $10,000 personal recognize bond for the  second degree home invasion charge.

At 1:18 pm on 1/5/13, Mauricio Southbird, 18, and Cameron Schocko, 22, were arrested shortly after leaving an Empire Township home carrying items.  The incident was reported by an alert neighbor.  The Traverse City woman was driving the vehicle that the men were in when they were arrested.  Southbird remains lodged and Schocko has been released on bond pending further court appearances.

Traffic stop results in needed medical attention

A traffic stop in Leland Township was a welcome event for a 86 year old man.  After being stopped at 3:55 pm for erratic driving, a Leelanau County Sergeant discovered the man to be incoherent and possibly having a diabetic episode.  Suttons Bay Rescue was summoned to attend to the driver.

TC man jailed for driving violations

A 45 year old man was jailed after being stopped for a traffic violation in Suttons Bay Township.  It was discovered that he was driving under the influence of intoxicants and his license was suspended when he was stopped at 8:40 pm on S West Bay Shore Drive near McCallister Road.  He was later released on a $5,000 personal recognize bond.
