Kasben begins jail sentence
William E. Kasben began a 90 day jail sentence Monday for Allowing Livestock to Run at Large. Kasben, 71, of Maple City, has a long history with Leelanau County Animal Control Deputies and the Leelanau County Court system regarding his livestock and how he cares for them. 45 days of the maximum sentence that was imposed on Kasben will be held in abeyance, meaning he will only serve the first 45 days.On February 1, Kasben was found guilty on three cases of Livestock at Large stemming from 3 reports of his cattle being at large and in the roadway in August 2012. The jury trial was before 86th District Court Judge Mike Stepka, who imposed the maximum sentence on the 90 day misdemeanor charge.
Suttons Bay Youth Arrested for Assault
Deputies responded to a Suttons Bay Township residence at 8:09 pm Monday for a report of domestic violence. After an investigation, they arrested a 17 year old male who witnesses say assaulted his girlfriend and another man. He is being held in the Leelanau County Jail awaiting an appearance with the magistrate.5 Lodged for Contempt/ Bond Violations
3 people were arrested Monday on Contempt of Court bench warrants and 2 more for bond violations. Those arrested for contempt are being held without bond pending a Friday court appearances in District Court. The 2 arrested for bond violations will see the magistrate today for bond review and possible modification.Bench warrants for contempt of court are issued for deliberate disregard or disobedience of a court order, often after a defendant is convicted of a crime. Examples would be failure to pay fines/costs or failure to attend an alcohol or drug assessment or counseling as ordered.
Bond violations occur after the magistrate or judge has set bond conditions for a defendant and one or more of the conditions are not abided by. Examples would be having contact with a person who is protected as a bond condition or consuming alcohol contrary to a bond condition not to drink.

- Christopher L. Covert, 28, Northport. Surrendered on bond violation for Operating While Intoxicated charge
- Rebecca A. Winowiecki, 39, Maple City. Arrested for second bond violation for domestic violence charge
- Michael A. Neddo, 18, Maple City. Arrested on bench warrant for contempt charge after Malicious Destruction of Property <$200 conviction
- John W. Turnquist, 34, Traverse City. Surrendered on bench warrant for contempt charge on OWI second charge
- Elias R. Wreford, 30, Empire. Surrendered on bench warrant for contempt charge after Operating While Impaired conviction
