Reported drunk driver wasn't drunk but was suspended

Leelanau Dispatch received a call at 12:48 pm Wednesday reporting a driver with slurred speech and smelling of alcohol at an Elmwood Township business.  A vehicle description was given and the 36 year-old driver was located in the area by a Leelanau County Sheriff's deputy.

The deputy determined that the driver was not intoxicated but after checking the man through the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN), it was discovered that his driving privileges had been suspended.  The driver was cited for Driving Suspended and was given a court date to appear in District Court.

MSP arrests probation violator

Michigan State Police arrest a probation violator from Leelanau County Wednesday.  Simone C. Raphael, 33, of Grawn, was picked up in Grand Traverse County on two Leelanau County bench warrants.  Both warrants were for failing to appear at two collection hearings involving $1546 in unpaid fines and costs.

The collection hearing were the result of convictions for Operating While Intoxicated and Operating While Intoxicated 2nd Offense in 2007 and 2008 respectively.  Raphael remains jailed until the $1546 is paid and the cases are closed.  Another District Court hearing will be scheduled if the fines remain unpaid.
