Seat Belt Violation Ends in Arrest

On 8-24-13, at approximately 1325hrs, a Leelanau County Sheriff's deputy was on patrol in the area of Shady Lane and M22 when he observed a blue SUV turn off from M22 onto Shady Lane being driven by a male subject who did not have his seat belt on.  The deputy could see the male driver trying to put on the seat belt after seeing the Sheriff's vehicle.  A traffic stop was made and the deputy made contact with the driver.

During the traffic stop the deputy could sense the driver was very nervous.  The driver indicated he had a bad week and did not want any problems with law enforcement.  The deputy checked the driver through the law enforcement information network and found the driver was wanted out of Benzie County on an outstanding warrant.  This warrant was for operating a motor vehicle with out insurance and failing to report a traffic accident.  The driver was placed under arrest for this outstanding warrant.  After the arrest the deputy checked the interior of the SUV and found an open can of beer.  The driver then admitted to drinking while driving down the roadway.

The driver, a 44yr old man from Lake Ann was transported to the Leelanau County Jail and lodged for the outstanding warrant and for transporting an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
