Fire Destroys Elmwood Township Home

A home was heavily damaged by fire early Tuesday morning on S. West Bay Shore Drive near Crain Hill Road in Elmwood Township.  A 911 call was received at 1:16 am.  The residents were awakened by smoke alarms and all four family members were able to get out of the house safely.

A Sheriff's Office Sergeant was first on the scene and discovered visible flames under the front portch.  He tried unsuccessfully to put out the flames with his patrol car fire extinguisher.  Fire fighters from Elmwood Township, Suttons Bay-Bingham, Cedar and Traverse City Fire Department eventually brought the fire under control.

The fire remains under investigation by the Leelanau County fire investigator and Elmwood Township fire department.
