Weekend update

Dangerous daytime drunk driver taken off road

Thanks to a concerned citizen and an observant deputy, a dangerous drunk driver was arrested Sunday afternoon.  A driver called Leelanau dispatch at 12:06 pm Sunday to report a car swerving out of its lane and running oncoming traffic off of the road.  The car was on S. West Bay Shore Drive in Bingham Township and the caller reported several near misses.

A Leelanau County deputy located the suspect vehicle and was able to stop the car using the siren.  The driver was extremely intoxicated and had a half-full half-gallon of vodka on the driver's side floor.  The 59 year-old Northport man was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated 2nd offense after failing field sobriety tests.  A blood test was offered to screen for possible drug impairment as well.

The man remains jailed pending an appearance before the magistrate.  Second offense drunk driving is punishable by a minimum 5 days and maximum 1 year in jail and up to $1,000 fine.

Since it was a first offense, the man was cited rather than arrested.

Douglas D. Goodrich, 33, was arrested Friday for violating terms of his bond following a Domestic Violence arrest earlier in the month.  Goodrich, of Bingham Township, was discovered to have been living back at the marital home and scene of the assault.  This violated bond conditions prohibiting his return to the home or contact with the victim, his wife.  Goodrich remains lodged pending a new bond being set by a District Court judge.
